Did you know that new information from the CMHA has connected window cleaning with improved mental health? Learn more by clicking on the title above!

Window Cleaning is Healthy?

Winter here in the GTA is bad for your health in more ways than you might know.

Have you ever felt yourself feeling a little “down in the dumps” during our dreary and depressingly dark Toronto winters? If so, you’re not alone.

The medical community has extensively studied the physiological effects of extended periods of darkness on our bodies and even coined a term to describe it: Seasonal Affective Disorder, or “SAD”.

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), “recent studies suggest that SAD is more common in northern countries, where the winter day is shorter.” This would explain why Canadians in particular suffer from SAD at a rate of 2% to 3%, with another 15% diagnosed with the less extreme, but still debilitating “winter blues”.

Are you amoung the 17-18% of affected Canadians that have to suffer from this kind of weaker mental health for months on end? How can you know? And what can help you relieve some of this stress?

How Can You Know If You Have SAD?

According to the CMHA, “SAD can be difficult to diagnose, since many of the symptoms are similar to those of other types of depression or bipolar disorder. Generally, symptoms that recur for at least 2 consecutive winters, without any other explanation for the changes in mood and behaviour, indicate the presence of SAD.”

Here are 9 symptoms that may indicate you are suffering from SAD:

1. change in appetite, in particular a craving for sweet or starchy foods
2. weight gain
3. decreased energy
4. fatigue
5. tendency to oversleep
6. difficulty concentrating
7. irritability
8. avoidance of social situations
9. feelings of anxiety and despair

Does that include you? If so, what can help you find relief?

If you are suffering from SAD, what can help?

First of all, we are not doctors, so talk to your doctor first before doing anything different, and let them make a diagnosis.

For those who do suffer from SAD, in addition to restricting yourself to a healthier diet, and regularly exercising, the CMHA also recommends the following:

“People with mild symptoms can benefit from spending more time outdoors during the day and by arranging their environments so that they receive maximum sunlight.”

Great news!

The friendly professionals at Paneless Perfection are maximum-sunlight enhancing experts!

We can’t control your diet or help you hit the gym, but we certainly can help you rearrange your environment to help you receive the maximum amount of sunlight, by professionally scrubbing down your home’s windows, and helping those precious rays of sun reach deeper into your home, and help you feel better by experiencing some relief from SAD.

In fact, if you don’t actually feel better for at least 7 consecutive days after having your windows cleaned by the friendly professionals at Paneless Perfection, then you won’t pay a dime for your window cleaning services, that’s how confident we are that you’ll love the results.

This is an actual x-ray image of someone's replacement hip, following a painful fracture. Would it surprise you to know that 97% of ladder injuries occur in the home environment? Learn more by clicking the "Why Ladders Are So Dangerous!" link above.

Are you thinking about getting up on some ladders and cleaning your own windows, instead of hiring a trained and experienced professional?

Please be careful.

Did you know that a fall of as little as 3 feet can cause you serious harm?

You could possibly even fracture a bone, like the unsuspecting and unfortunate person who’s replacement hip is shown in the x-ray above!

What impact would it have on your family if you broke a bone because you took an unnecessary risk and fell off your ladder?

What impact would it have on your job?

How long would you have to endure pain? Are you good with pain?

Take it from someone who broke both his tibia and fibula in a split-second: It’s a horrible experience.

In my case, I was nineteen years old, and I broke it in a freak diving board accident. Ask me about it sometime, I’ll fill you in. (I’ll even let you feel the 4 screwheads that are part of the permanent stainless steel fixtures in my tibia!)

Since then, I’ve been probably the most careful ladder user in the Greater Toronto area, and I train all our team members at Paneless Perfection to exercise obsessive care in ascending and descending them when we come to service your property.

“We should treat ladders as dangerous”

Lara Trifiletti, Ph.D., a researcher with the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Columbus Children’s Hospital in Ohio, along with colleagues, examined federal statistics on nonfatal ladder injuries that sent people to emergency rooms.

Ninety-seven percent of those cases happened in what Trifiletti calls “non-occupational” settings like homes.

“Maybe a lot of people are doing do-it-yourself home repairs,” Trifiletti said. “That may be one explanation why we see such a high rate in homes.”

What to do? “Most people like to think of a ladder as a fairly benign piece of equipment, but the injuries that result are very serious,” Trifiletti said. “We should treat ladders like a potentially dangerous tool, like a power saw or razor-sharp plane.”

Michael Mello, M.D., director of Injury Prevention Center at Rhode Island Hospital, said the findings appear to be valid. According to him, ladder injuries should not be taken lightly.

“Many of these fractures are very complex and require extensive surgery. That’s only part of the problem. These fractures of hands, wrists, ankles and feet can require future surgeries, rehab and lifelong arthritis or chronic pain,” he said. “I see patients frequently who are still bothered by pain from complex fractures after falls many years ago.”

Ouch.

Your broken bones aren’t worth any price.

Leave the ladder work to the experts at Paneless Perfection.

We’ll make it easy for you.
